Rainy Days and Sundays
Here we are talking about Sunday. Hard to believe we’ve been on the road for four and a half days already. Time always passes too fast when you least expect it. The Sunday itinerary was another tough mileage day for the books. 386 miles from Tulsa, OK to Amarillo, TX.
Of course the day started out with a deluge of rain. We’ve had rain for all four days but again, it turns out we have been incredibly lucky. The rain just seems to stop each time we approach a place where we want to get out of the car.
Artist Stop
One of our pre-planned stops for Sunday was at Jerry McClanahan’s Art Gallery. We are using Jerry’s EZ Guide for Route 66 Travelers. He encourages folks to stop by when you’re in Chandler, OK and he will sign your book.
The gallery is amazing as is all the artwork. We left with a few prints in tow. But the best part of our day was Ben showing Jerry his journal artwork. Jerry was so enthusiastic to look at his pictures and he knew what each one represented save one. Amazing. He even posted about it on Facebook (with our permission).

And he even drew a page in Ben’s journal. Ben took the time to color it in later in the day.

It was something unique and special on this trip that helps us make it our own.
Desolate Driving
We do realize that most of the purveyors of Route 66 want to see a growth of interest in people to travel the route to preserve its history and support the towns and businesses that remain.
One of the most interesting takeaways from many of these stops is who is traveling 66. When you look at the pins on the maps of those keeping track, there are way more people from Europe taking the Route 66 trek across the country than the people that actually live in it.
For us, much of our driving on the older stretches has been alone. I mean we’ve encountered no one, And it’s been kind of nice to get away from the noise and chaos and just enjoy that bit of desolate driving.

More Cars for Ben
Sunday was also a day for more Cars movie inspirations for Ben. These have been really fun for him. More than we thought. He yells out the character from Cars when he sees them. “Look! It’s Ramone’s”!

It’s Lizzie!

Iconic Food
There is so much great food on the road. With nearly 400 miles driven on Sunday and two states, we had to try out a few.
No trip to Arcadia, OK would be complete without stopping at Pop’s.

A vast collection of soda to choose from and a place for Ben to try out his very first soda. A Route 66 Blue Raspberry (just like his favorite Icee flavor).

Then there was lunch in El Reno, OK. A place known for places that serve up a depression era sandwich known as the onion burger. A handful of onions smashed into hamburger to make the meat go further. All I can say is heavenly. We stopped at Robert’s which only has about ten diner style seats at the counter. Another first for Ben to sit counter style. He loves it and now wants to sit at the counter everywhere we go.

Who can visit Amarillo, TX and not stop at the Big Texan for a steak dinner? Not us! Such a fun atmosphere and a great steak. Notice that Ben is decked out in his cowboy boots and hat! Yee Haw!!

Points of Interest
Let’s not forget these gems of interest.

Cross of Our Lord Jesus Christ – Pampa, TX
There is so much more to this stop than the cross itself. It’s a huge complex and quite beautiful and peaceful. Very worth the stop despite being exhausted.

Round barn – Arcadia, OK

Lucille’s – Hydro, OK
There is so much more to this day we could share but alas, it’s really hard to keep up!
